Monday, May 31. 2004 I was expecting the worst but still I told myself that if The Day after Tomorrow is going to work in any way for me I had to see it in the theatre. And so after 30 minutes of convincing my girlfriend who thought even worse about it we got into the car yesterday and drove up to Hamburg. What can I say? It turned out to be better than what we had expected, it still wasn't brilliant but still - we were expecting the whole american melodramatic, patriotic package which didn't get delivered. No extreme happy ending, no superstar that rules them all no exaggerated flow of tears which is very nice and something that did surprise me and my girlfriend even more. This is something we certainly didn't expect from Roland Emmerich and something we're happy to see in such a big movie. Okay so much for the good stuff, things that really annoyed me were product placement and animation. I mean did FOX pay for the complete movie? There is FOX news running on every single TV throughout the whole movie, the reporters we see are all from FOX and in this one particular scene where the TV doesn't show a FOX sign someone actually comes up to the TV and says: "Hey, sorry people I gotta switch this..." and *ZAP* there is the FOX logo again. Please! Is this really necessary? Okay so much for that, now about the animation of course the movie was animated through and through I was expecting that and everyone should but do they really need to animate anything and everything? I thought all the animations of crashing, drowning houses etc. were done very well but they overdid it when they animated a bunch of wolfes which was completely unnecessary and looked very crappy I really wonder why they would do that. Other than that, I really like Dennis Quaid and I like Jake Gyllenhaal even more. Both of them delivered a good appearance and helped the movie a lot, at least for me. In the end I am surprised to be able to tell you, yes - you can go out and watch 'The Day after Tomorrow' in your local theatre but don't expect too much mainly your gonna see a big blockbuster featuring the latest tricks in the movie business. I'd still recommed you to watch Deep Impact instead of it, it is better in many ways, maybe even all - except animation. |
