Grosse Pointe Blank

Grosse Pointe Blank PosterYup, looks like I'm having John Cusack days lately. This movie actually was my choice the last time me and my girfriend stood in front of my dvd shelves again. I was pretty sure I had written an article about it previousely but checking my blog tought me different. Grosse Pointe Blank has been one of my favourite movies for quite some time already and I enjoy watching it over and over again. Talking about the genre I am not entirely sure where to put it, it is somewhere between comedy/romance/thriller and in my opinion it's mostly comedy. The romance arrives pretty late and the thrilling part of it is usually disrupted or prefaced by loud laughs, which doesn't leave too much space for any tenseness.

There are a couple of factors that let me enjoy this movie so highly. First of all there is of course the cast with John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack and Dan Aykroyd. John in one of his completely unforgettable roles, hilarious and brilliant at once, accompanied by named three that fit in just perfectly. I couldn't think of anyone else that could have supported him so well. Another very big part of the movie plays music, the soundtrack immediately attracts attention and invites you to sing along with 'The Clash', 'The Specials' or any other of the heavily loaded playlist. The actually released a 'Volume 2' CD of the soundtrack which took me a pretty long to finally get my hands on, but by now I am owner of them both.

There is nothing too serious about 'Grosse Pointe Blank', it's mostly black, black comedy which makes the movie easy to follow and lets me highly enjoy it. The story is kept simple (and pretty unbelivable), the dialogues are hilarious (especially Cusacks) and it all together adds up to something very special - it just fits. Sure it's no dramatical or technical masterpice but point is that it doesn't needs to be that to work out perfectly.
Marty: This your Beamer?
Paul: Yeah.
Marty: In Detroit? That's sacrilege!
This is a pretty nice example of the dialogues that await you when watching 'Grosse Pointe Blank', since the age of the movie I guess many of you have seen it until today - to all the others I can only warmly recommend this one - it's one of my personal favourites. Oh and one last thing for all my german readers - while the title of the movie 'Grosse Pointe Blank' somehow sounds german and is in fact readable as german sentence it's not meant like that. 'Grosse Pointe' is actually a city in the USA to be precise in the state of Michigan and because of this we germans have our own (queer) title for this movie, which is: "Ein Mann - Ein Mord" ...

rev. 1.00With the screening of 'The Sure Thing' a couple of days ago, the 80s marched right back into my living room. Somehow I wasn't quite prepared for it, sure IMDB says 1985 so what did I expect? I dunno, what I do know is that I have my problems with

OOOPS I did it again... (Yes, a crappy music quote for a crappy movie) I already told myself to stay away from Ben Stiller but looks like I didn't learn anything. First of all Along came Polly wasn't as bad as Duplex. I wasn't upset when the credits rolle

I haven't have heard of that one yet - but since it was pretty cheap I just ordered it. I also ordered "Bullets over Broadway" a couple of days ago, I haven't have see that one either. So I guess I got a couple of more Cusack-Days coming...

Sure Ting is - for me - one of the best teenager movies ever. Damn, I was so in love with Daphne Zuniga :)
