Tuesday, March 29. 2005 With the screening of 'The Sure Thing' a couple of days ago, the 80s marched right back into my living room. Somehow I wasn't quite prepared for it, sure IMDB says 1985 so what did I expect? I dunno, what I do know is that I have my problems with the synthesizers and clothes of the 80s and it took me quite a while to get used to it. I followed the lead of Jens on this one as he referred to it as another great Cusack movie and now that I saw it I can clearly understand him.If IMDB is to be trusted 'The Sure Thing' was the first lead of John Cusack, he is in fact very young in this one which was another thing that scared me in the beginning and that I needed my time to get used to. Cusacks acting is far from being as brilliant as today but you can whitness a lot of motions he still uses or has perfected in some way until today. I was excited watching his acting and realizing how much better he got through all these years. Now don't get me wrong - his acting isn't bad in this one, it just got a lot better until today. His companion Daphne Zungia luckily didn't manage to raise any affections inside of me, still I thought she aswell delivered a pretty good play. 'The Sure Thing' is a romance and therefore it's very important to have actors the audience belives in, this is something that works out with these two. Once you have handled this, the only thing missing is a good story and you're on winning street. So what about the story? I thought it was a bit obvious in a very early stage already but other than that put together very nicely. The plain look of the 80s manages to taint the credibility of movies and I really have to put myself together to not start to quip or even laugh about the most usual things. I was able to get it together most of the time but once a blood young Tim Robbins entered the screen there just was no holding back anymore. Luckily he only played an underpart and therefore disappeared after a few minutes again. Nevertheless I think someone really should have made a law against the style of the Sunglasses in the 80s. To wrap it up here I have to say that looking at the whole picture, 'The Sure Thing' does work out and is without a doubt a very nice movie. Of course the problem remains - it is still 80s and you just have to be strong to seriousely sit though it. I am very happy to have gotten the chance to watch it and now that I am owner of the dvd can do it again whenever I feel like it (which probably isn't gonna happen any time soon) still I am thankful for the advise of Jens and I will not hesitate to follow his lead again! So thanks! |

I am hoping that through the next weeks I am going to manage to catch up a little on all of those unwrapped dvds that are standing there on my to-watch shelf. As a start I yesterday picked out Say Anything..., of which I really wish I could remember where
