Tuesday, May 31. 2005 No expectations but fear is what I felt when starting to watch 2004's De-Lovely. The genre at imdb clearly says 'Musical' and I'd lie to you if I was to say I am fond of them. Nevertheless, it is another 'What if?' movie and therefore has to be inspected personally to figure out whether it is able to move me or not. The imdb page also states drama and romance so I guessed there would be something more to it than just singing and dancing. I had been surprised quite a few times through the last days and thats definitely making me venturous, even if this one was supposed to fail - it was the best time to watch it.Luckily I am able to tell you that 'De-Lovely' did surprise me - in a good way. It was different from what I had expected eventhough there was quite a bid of singing. De-Lovely is a documentary and biography of the life of famous american writer and musician Cole Porter. Don't mind if that doesn't ring a bell yet, I can promise you that you'll recognize more songs of him you would ever think, at least I did for sure. The movie takes place in the time from about 1920 to 1960, so be prepared for Broadway-Musicals and Theatres. I wondered how the movie managed to get the singing and the storyline so good together, sometimes I didn't even recognize the singing at first, because it only took place in the background. Then again there were those songs that were performed by musicians like Alainis Morrisette or Robbie Williams, those obviousely were not to miss and nice to hear. The personal highlight of this movie for me is the role of Ashley Judd, finally a role apart from those cheap and annoying thrillers, finally a role that satisfies and shows her great talent. I have the highest hopes, that this movie finally took her away from this cliche she seemed to be stuck in. Her partner Kevin Kline also delivers a great play but I must say that since seeing him in 1982's A Fish called Wanda it always takes me some time to start taking him serious but once that settles in he's able to win me over through and through. Similar to many biographies this one isn't all but happy, there are hard times, deaths and quite a few obstacles to take still in the end it all seems balanced and good. Recommending 'De-Lovely'? Yes, I think I can. I think it would fit many of you better than you think, of course if you are phobic against music and singing in movies maybe not. If you're uncertain whether this could work out for you, go ahead and check a song of 'Cole Porter's' to get you into the mood, then I am sure you'll be able to fully enjoy it! |

rev. 1.00After having seen the surprising De-Lovely just beforehand, I thought why not go through with it and watch Beyond the Sea, which sounded like a music-related movie too right afterwards? My sister called and came over to visit me, once I told her

rev. 1.00I know it took me long enough but movie wise my year of 2004 is at it's end. With this article there are only 3 left to go and since I don't have any plans for the coming days, my chances to watch and write about these 3 movies are fairly good. R

Walk the Line is the last movie I had to have seen before the Oscars arrive tomorrow. A key movie nominated for not less than five Oscars in some of the best categories. I am still missing several movies to judge all the categories correctly, but as of no
