Wednesday, June 1. 2005 After having seen the surprising De-Lovely just beforehand, I thought why not go through with it and watch Beyond the Sea, which sounded like a music-related movie too right afterwards? My sister called and came over to visit me, once I told her what I just had seen and what I was going for, she agreed to participate and so we started watching 'Beyond the Sea' right after I had supper. At first I thought that this would be the last music related movie of 2004 I'd see but then I realized there was another one missing... Ray. That one even got nominated for a couple of Oscars, so I'd better make sure not to miss it.'Beyond the Sea' is surprisingly similar to 'De-Lovely', it's also a documentary/biography but about the singer and actor Bobby Darin, even the times collide as this movie takes place from about 1950 to 1970. On the other hand there also are a lot of differencies. This movie is definitely a bit faster and louder than 'De-Lovely', it also is a little bit more comedic. Sill I would either add to both or none of them the genre musical, because they sing equally much in both of them. I was excited to see how Kevin Spacey would manage this role, not only the acting but also all the singing. Besides playing the lead, he also written, directed and produced this movie - a one-man show, that clearly shows his ambitions in this project. I don't think there are many people around that could manage all those tasks and come up with a decent result, Spacey nevertheless is one of the few I'd dare to work it out. He probably is one of the most remarkable actors of our time and his roles always have been a pleasure to me. I have to say I wondered a little when I saw that he chose Kate Bosworth to play it his side. I have seen a couple of times before but mostly either in small or premature roles, now this one would show if she had the talent to go big - on the other hand, if Spacey choose her the chances that she'd deliver were pretty high. Watching 'Beyond the Sea' I thought both of them acted fairly good, but far from truly remarkable. Spacey felt rather usual and Bosworths role turned out to be a little bit smaller than I thought it would be, funny thing is that I checked back with the character she plays in the movie, actress Sandra Dee and I thought they pretty much looked alike which clearly reveales why Spacey wanted her. Nevertheless I thought this role was a huge leap forward for Bosworth, this is an upgrown role and I thought she performed pretty well. The overall feeling I had with the movie sadly wasn't as good as I wished for. The music was nice and I recognized a lot of songs still the story itself didn't felt too exciting and I have to admit that 'De-Lovely' managed to move me a little bit more.Watching 'Beyond the Sea' is worth it for the sake of Spaceys, I thought his role was remarkable and I wouldn't want to have missed to see him acting, still I think for all of you that don't think too great of him probably won't be able to enjoy it as much as I did. So in case if you're in it for Spacey go for it, otherwise I'd stick with 'De-Lovely'. |

rev. 1.00I know it took me long enough but movie wise my year of 2004 is at it's end. With this article there are only 3 left to go and since I don't have any plans for the coming days, my chances to watch and write about these 3 movies are fairly good. R

Walk the Line is the last movie I had to have seen before the Oscars arrive tomorrow. A key movie nominated for not less than five Oscars in some of the best categories. I am still missing several movies to judge all the categories correctly, but as of no
