Sunday, June 12. 2005 With my recent visits to the theatres there was one recurrent trailer of a movie that seemed very promising to me. Yes, I am of course talking about 'War of the Worlds' and in order to prepare for it, it was about time to catch up on the original version, The War of the Worlds from 1953. I had been wanting to order the dvd at DVDSoon as usual, but to my disappointment I had to learn that it isn't produced anymore. As the used prices at amazon.com ascended beyond reasonability I was left no choice and ordered the used german dvd that comes with english language aswell, at no less than 7 euros (yup, I know DVD-Update coming soon!).Nothing more than 2 days later I found the dvd in my mailbox and after an additional 2 days me and my girlfriend even made it to watch it. I think my girlfriend was even more anxious to watch it than I was, still I'd say she didn't make more of it than the first 15 minutes before falling asleep, which resulted in a mixture of displeased mumbling and grumbling when I woke her after the movie had ended. Not because of me of course but because of the fact that she really wanted to see this movie and didn't wanted to fall asleep. Well, as I got the dvd I guess she'll find the time through the next days to catch up on what she missed. I didn't knew what to expect of a Sc-Fi movie of the 1950s, I mostly thought it would turn out to be pretty funny to see the phony effects and 'weird' acting, which did turn out to be true but on the other hand I also have to say that the story surprised me, a lot actually. I never would have thought that it would come with any depth and credibility and in fact it came with a lot of both of them. Sure the effects needed some time to get used to but after that I was as excited watching the movie as I would have been when watching any other new-age Sci-Fi movie. The popularity of 'The War of the Worlds' originally derives from a 1938 radio play of H.G. Wells book, wich has been broadcasted so realistically that some of the people listening actually called the police. You can read more about it here. People have been sceptical about the translation of the book into a movie at first but luckily their concern has not been met. Up to today the question to many Sci-Fi fans of which are the most remarkable movies of this genre, will be answered with a list of movies that will also include 1953s 'The War of the Worlds' . This obviousely makes me ask what for we need the remake then, especially after I had such a great time watching the original. I think Mr. Spielberg has picked a much more complicated topic than I ever would have imagined and I am very excited to find out what he made of it. So far I can only advise you to watch the original, regardless if you're planning to see the remake or not. |
