Saturday, September 24. 2005 I haven't been as lazy as some of might may think through the last weeks, it's not like I am having a huge backlog or anything. I've just been up to different things beside watching movies. There are lots of things going on right now and I just didn't manage to watch any of them. As my girlfriend is still writing her final thesis, we've started to watch through some of my Friends seasons, not only because they rule but also because of her rather having time to watch some Friends episodes than watching a full length movie. My review of Hide and Seek is about three weeks ago. I had serious doubts about it and I remember reading the worst reviews back in the beginning of April, when it started to screen over here. My girlfriend chose it for relaxation and when we started to watch it, I told her what I've had read and that she shouldn't be upset in case it turned out mediocre and boring. Well, I guess our Sunday had been busy enough that we could have taken it up with such a movie, that means if it really turned out like that. In the end I couldn't say it did, I am not soo much of a psycho-thriller fan, which 'Hide and Seek' definitely falls into but I couldn't come up with anything that turned it into something remotely as bad as I had read before. Then again, to say it again - I generally despise movies of it's kind and I still thought it sucked in the genre-way. Storywise the movie relies on its youngest performer which makes it barely belivable once the big ending has been revealed, but I think that people with a favour for this genre often either don't care about those incredibilities or simply just don't pay too much attention to it. Take my girlfriend for example, she hid behind my arm quite a few times when tention came up and eventhough I'd say she missed about 4 'exciting' minutes of the movie, she stated in the end that it was pretty much 'alright'. The cast of 'Hide and Seek' is top-notch, especially for those that have an small thing for Famke Janssen like I have. Her role is actually the smallest of them all and barely worth a mention but she walks through the screen quite a few times and that's plenty for me. The big roles of the movie are being held by Rober De Niro and Dakota Fanning. De Niro didn't quite manage to convince for another time and I really hope that his future is going to bring forward something memorable for another time, so that the last thing we'll see of him won't be any of this rather usual thrillers or even boring comedies. The biggest part of the rather small success of 'Hide and Seek' is carried by the talented Dakota Fanning. It is her role and acting that made me follow through with this movie from the beginning to the end. It's her strength that proves for another time that a strong lead can make up (at least partly) for a weak storyline. So, should you watch 'Hide and Seek'? Well if you're up for cheap thrills certainly, you won't care about any of the side effects. For all the others it's probably easiest to skip it, eventhough the part of Dakota really is astounding.
