Monday, November 20. 2006 It was mainly because of my girlfriend that I didn't went to see The Lake House in the theatres back in the days it was screening. She didn't seem to have any sort of interest in it and therefore it took me quite a long time to convice her to watch it with me. The reason why I wanted to see it was the obvious - the reunification of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock 12 years after the fabulous action movie Speed. I couldn't think of a reason why these two shouldn't work for a second time and therefore saw an increased chance for 'The Lake House' to work out overall.Sadly it didn't and not because of these two not working out, but because of a storyline that felt entirely unsuited for a movie of the romance genre. Due the storyline the two leading roles were practially speparated from each other and there wasn't a single scene in which they were actually talking to each other face to face, but I am getting ahead of myself... 'The Lake House' tells the story of two people that live in the same house, but in different times. While one lives in 2006 the other one lives in 2004. Accidently these two find out that they're able to talk to each other through the mailbox that is standing in front of the house. How this works is never explained and up to the audiences imagination. The more the couple learns to know each other by sending letters through the mailbox, the more they start to yearn for each other and soon enough they start planning on how they could meet up. Now that you know that, you know that the first half of the movie is completely without any dialogue. All we see is our two leading roles and the letters they wrote to each other read from the background. Of course there are a few nice things happening though that time, but overall I didn't thought that this was sufficent. When the meeting-period finally arrives, the whole 2004 - 2006 time difference stuff starts to get complicated. I often caught myself asking in which time we were at certain scenes and I couldn't say it got much better towards the ending. Actually I didn't really know what was happening right there in the end - but at least everything was good. Now I have to say that a movie with a claim like 'The Lake House' (lightweight romance movie) shouldn't do things like that, because the audience awaits something that barely was delivered here. Of course it is nice to see our couple ending up together in the end, but it certainly isn't a good thing if you're still thinking about how that happend after all, when you're walking out of the theatre. Overall I felt that 'The Lake House' went through some good and bad times and ended up being allright. Yes, it is interesting and entertaining, but it also does a few things it probably shouldn't have done. It was good to see Keanu and especially Sandra again and I think both of them delivered failry okay - still I hope the next time they do something new (together or apart from each other) the storyline will deliver a bit more for them.
