Monday, January 8. 2007 Last weekend I finally managed to see a movie that I had wanted to see for quite some time. All the President's Men had been on my to-watch list even before Garvin mentioned it at his visit in Kiel last month, but him mentioning it certainly raised the importance to finally check it out even further. Now that things with my appartment finally are going back to normal, I eventually found the time to sit down, relax and finally learn to know what that mysterious Watergate scandal was all about. No, I wasn't quite aware about what happened there before, do you?'All the President's Men' is a movie that focusses on two reporters of the 'Washington Post' that kept poking around the happenings of the 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee. With the help of an unkown informant they kept digging deeper and deeper for years until in the end their traces lead them to the White House and at the end of the day even to the President of the USA. We're all aware of the outcome of this and this movie is all about the long and dry road they had to take until they had found absolute back-breaking evidence against some of the most influential people of this planet. To be honest the movie didn't quite answer all the questions I had about the 'Watergate scandal', but it certainly brought me further I ever had been and after I studied the wikipedia page for another hour after I had seen the movie, I was sure that I now was aware of everything I needed to know regarding the 'Watergate scandal' and the downfall of President Nixon. The movie 'All the President's Men' is based on the non-fiction book of the same title, written by no one else but the reporter themselves. As the work of those two actually ended quite some time before the actual impeachment of the President, the movie leaves a small gap of questions in the end. At first this bothered me a little, but the more I had thought about it, the obvious it got that it would have drawn too much of its attention away from its leading roles and therefore away from what it actually was all about. It was incredible to see what these two reporters went through, researching day and night for years, in order to come up with reliable evidence to actually be able to print it in the newspaper. I also thought that Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford were an absolute dream-team, but I have to admit that I had been expecting nothing less. I enjoyed 'All the President's Men' and I really think it is one of those movies one should have seen. There is a lot to learn about journalism inside it and if the movie is to be trusted, these two reporters changed journalism forever with their hard work on this case. In case you shouldn't have seen 'All the President's Men' up to today, I can only warmly recommend it to you. Trackbacks
